Upon receiving the screener for Waking Nightmare, it says “starring Diane Franklin”. So of course, my first thought is “Fuck yeah!”
Light years away from the darling 80’s teenybopper rom-coms, Franklin has proven she has the chops to drive home the overprotective and overbearing mother of a tormented daughter, slapping us with creepy elements far from the adorable, happy faced days of Better Off Dead. In basic terms, Franklin kills it!
College student Jordan (Regner) has been suffering from terrible nightmares and frequent sleep walking, ever since her roommate committed suicide, which left her with thoughts of guilt and anguish. While she is recuperating at home with mom (Franklin) and her quirky dad (an eccentric Jamison Newlander), Jordon reconnects with friends, visits her doctor (the talented Naughton) for medicine adjustments and finds herself occasionally waking up in strange places…sometimes soaked in blood.
Is she committing violent acts in her sleep, or are her nightmares just intensifying?
While the police waltz in to investigate, mom does her best to cover for her unwell daughter through acts of misleading direction and following Jordan on some of these nighttime excursions. With Jordan’s penchant for appearing in a trance-like state (think Tabitha, The Ring) while wielding a knife, the suspense ignites as the story takes an unpredictable twist. You may not see this coming, and you do not want to miss this!
