Whistle is a horror movie directed by Corin Hardy, who is also known for his work on The Nun. It stars Nick Frost and Dafne Keen, and the story follows two friends who find an ancient Aztec Death Whistle. This unleashes a curse that summons death to hunt them down. Many people have compared it to movies like Final Destination, but with a twist. The movie premiered at Fantastic Fest on the 25th of September and was released in the US on the 6th of February. The movie then got a full UK release and has performed very well at the box office.
A Slasher Movie with High Production
Horror fans have described the movie as being a supernatural slasher with a high body count. Unlike most movies of its genre, this movie has been said to have a solid production value.
Even though the movie probably shows things to be a little more gruesome than necessary, it really cements the director’s style, and when considering his previous work, like The Hallow, it’s no surprise that this approach was taken. It’s fast-paced and intense, with the potential for a sequel.
Three months after the duo believes that the curse has ended, the movie shows someone else opening a box, only to find the whistle inside. The character, who we know to be Asha, is set to take the stage with a violin performance, but then blows the whistle instead, indicating that everyone in the auditorium is now doomed. Hiding scenes like this halfway through the credits not only allows horror fans to get a sneak peek of the second movie, but it also paves the way for an even bigger movie.
The Aztec Death Whistle is a Real Instrument
Interestingly, the Aztec Death Whistle is a real instrument. It’s ceramic, skull-shaped, and designed to produce a terrifying sound. It’s very similar to that of a human scream, with the original whistle found in 1999.
It’s linked to the Aztec death rituals and honours the god of wind. Interestingly, the Aztec theme is quite big in popular culture currently, which explains why Whistle was such a success. Cemican, a heavy metal band, heavily incorporates Aztec mythology, with lyrics focused on history. Aztec instruments are also woven into the music.
Lost Gold of the Aztecs is also a hit with viewers. The reality TV series follows families in their search for Montezuma’s treasure in the American Southwest. Slots online also cover the theme. Titles including Rise of Aztec Lock & Slingo feature Aztec mythology, temples, and stunning scenery that strongly represent the era. Graphics include Aztec headdresses, showing that the theme is more prominent than ever.
When you break everything down, it’s clear that Whistle focusing on the Aztec theme was a wise move, and the fact that there’s already a sequel lined up shows that our love for the era is still very much evident.
