The decision to put Zack Snyder in charge of Army of the Dead was spot on. He delivered a horror film so great that Netflix asked him to create a sequel. Snyder obliged. But only he could finish a different project first.
The project in question is Rebel Moon, a science fiction movie expected to come out on Netflix later in December. Now that we know Snyder is almost done with his science fiction project, when can we expect Army of the Dead 2?
Expected Release Date—Early to Mid-2024
Considering Rebel Moon is in its production stage, Zack Snyder is probably too busy ensuring the film will be a hit. That means he won’t touch Army of the Dead 2 until later this year.
If that's the case, the earliest we could see Army of the Day is next year. Snyder is notorious for keeping details about his projects a secret. As such, he could surprise everyone with an early release of the film.
To be clear, the upcoming sequel won’t be called Army of the Dead 2. It will go by the name, Planet of the Dead. The Army series has been giving unique names to each film, anyways.
First, there was Army of the Dead—an action film with a small number of zombies. Then came the prequel, Army of Thieves, which added action and zombies. Expectedly, Planet of the Dead will have plenty more action involving an army of the dead.
Speculating Planet of the Dead’s Plot
Everyone knows Army of the Dead 2 will feature tremendous zombie action. But what else can fans expect from Zack Snyder’s second edition of the film? First, the movie will probably bring back Alphas and Shamblers.
If you’re yet to watch Army of the Dead, spoiler alert. Alphas are a group of intelligent zombies. They walk and run quickly. They can reason to some degree and are harder to eliminate. Shamblers move slowly and are easy to kill.
Considering this film is set in Las Vegas, Snyder will probably borrow character ideas from the original film. In Army of the Dead, zombies included Elvis impersonators, cosplay fans, and gamblers. Speaking of gambling, Planet of the Dead would be lots of fun if it featured action inside a popular casino. Nevada is similar to New Jersey in that it permits both land-based and online casinos.
Beyond zombie fights, Army of the Dead introduced us to billionaire Bly Tanaka and his quest to rule the post-apocalyptic Las Vegas. He orders countless heists in the city. And he wants the head of Alpha Zombie.
A Fresh Set of Characters?
In Army of the Dead, no one was safe from zombie bites or bullet wounds. Most characters died before the film ended. The only major characters who made it out of Vegas were Vanderohe (Omari Hardwick) and Kate Ward (Ella Purnell).
Vanderohe appeared to have a zombie bite on his arm. Depending on Snyder’s plans with this character, Omari might end up with a major role in the upcoming sequel. Or, he might be eliminated from the film early on.
Considering the bite came from Alpha Zombie, the most likely outcome is that Vanderohe will become an important part of the Alpha Zombie universe. Scott Ward, Dave Bautista’s character as Kate’s dad in the film, was killed off.
Other characters expected to return include Geet (Huma Qureshi) and Gwendoline—played by Nathalie Emmanuel. Snyder also plans to bring bath Ludwig Dieter—we’ve revealed more details about this character below.
A Horror Film Centered on a Heist
Although Snyder is yet to shed more details about Army of the Dead 2, he told Variety last year that he’s leaning towards Science Fiction. He suggested the idea to Shay Hatten—lead writer of Army of the Dead—and Shay likes the idea.
The Justice League director believes Army of the Dead 2 will be more intriguing if it’s centered on a heist. Tanaka will most likely be the man bankrolling the heist while the government will be busy trying to end the outbreak.
To add a twist to the sequel, Snyder said he will break back Ludwig Dieter, the character played by Matthias Schweighofer. In Army of the Dead, Ludwig allegedly sacrificed himself so that Vanderohe could live.
However, we didn’t see him die. That makes it easy to bring the character back to life. Considering his friend has a zombie bite, he will probably have to fight off Vanderohe now.
More Action in Mexico
Army of the Dead was primarily shot in Las Vegas. Many characters in the film didn’t make it out of the city. However, there are signs the sequel will feature some action outside the country.
The explanation is that after Vanderohe fought off Zeus and stole some money from the vault, his first idea was to buy a ticket to Mexico City. As we mentioned, though, Vanderohe has a zombie bite on his arm.
Whether he makes it to Mexico City or not, there’s a chance he will turn into a zombie. And that means he could infect more people on his way there. Depending on Snyder’s plans for the film, some of the action in the film will most probably take place in Mexico.
Robot Zombies and Other Unanswered Questions
While talking to Polygon in 2021, Snyder revealed that fans would see some of the questions answered in the upcoming film. For example, they will find out whether the government had indeed planted robot zombies amid the Army of the Dead.
Another popular question Planet of the Dead will answer regards whether Tanaka has evil or good intentions for the undead people. That being said, the famous director doesn’t seem too concerned about the time loop that will have taken place between the two films.
Planet of the Dead may start where its prequel ended without going into details about what happened in the time that has since passed. Nonetheless, fans are hoping the movie comes out sooner rather than later.
