Unexpected sports star cameos in horror movies

Cameos in movies have become commonplace in Hollywood over the past two decades.

Now it is no surprise to see a celebrity or character from another movie or franchise pop into the film you're watching. Horror movies are now one of the most common genres where this takes place.

But one cameo that is a rarity is that of a sports star.

It takes a very well-known and successful athlete to be able to cross over from sports superstar to movie star, hence why it is so rare.

Rise of the sport star

Sports stars are now some of the most recognised people in the world. The star of an athlete burns brighter than ever and casts its light far beyond the pitch, court or field.

While sports fans have always been dedicated and engaged, modern times allow them to take this several steps further. You follow your favourite players on social media, get notifications as soon as trades are finalised and are able to place bets on your favourite teams in real-time. Sportsbooks provide great promos like the BetRivers bonus code to get up to $500 before the launch, which has helped grow fanbases drastically as it allows fans another avenue to connect with their favourites.

As a result, sports is a worldwide phenomenon with millions of devoted fans, which is why seeing your favourite athlete in a movie is so captivating. Only a handful of athletes have been lucky enough to cameo in a horror movie however, here are the top three.

Mike Tyson - Scary Movie

Rarely is an actor scarier than the movie itself, but that's what we got when Mike Tyson appeared in Scary Movie 4 in 2006.

The baddest man on the planet played a fitting role in the movie, a female boxer who fights Cindy, played by Ana Faris, in a flashback boxing match.

Tyson, in traditional fashion, bit off the referees and a fan's ear in the scene. An ode to his horror show moment when he bit off Evander Holyfield's ear in 1997.

He would also go on to make another appearance in the franchise in 2013, with a cameo as himself in Scary Movie 5.

Vinnie Jones - Midnight Meat Train

Former footballer and notorious hardman Vinnie Jones made numerous cameo appearances in Hollywood immediately after retiring from his sport.

Famously known for his roles in Guy Ritchie's, Snatch and Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Jones usually played the toughest guy in the room, and Midnight Meat Train was no different.

Jones played a character called the Subway Butcher, a malicious serial killer who would trap and chop up unsuspecting passengers. Bradley Cooper played the main protagonist of the movie, a photographer hunting down the butcher.

Tony Hawk - Sharknado 5: Global Swarming

Tony Hawk is one of if not the greatest skateboarders of all time and is known to almost everybody around the world, which is why it was a surprise when he popped up in Sharknado 5 in 2017.

The movie had grown somewhat of a cult following for its goofy plotline and ridiculous acting. The franchise had decided to lean into this angle, making it more of a comedy horror movie. Slotting perfectly into the "it's so bad, it's good" genre.

The 'birdman' played a weapons specialist who was, you guessed it, also a skateboarder. Hawks' cameo, like many others, was complete fan service and helped promote and market the movie.

As athletes continue to become more and more famous, movie cameos will be more of a regular occurrence.

Sport star cameos in scary movies won't be as rare in the coming years.
