Enthusiasts know horror films can take many forms. From your standard slasher flick to thrillers and ghost stories, there are many ways to scare ourselves silly. One of our favourites is a good doomsday dialogue.
Whether it’s zombies, deadly viruses, or some other fantastical threat to humankind, we love to frighten ourselves with tales of what would happen if the end was nigh. So, without further ado, here are three of the best post-apocalyptic stories.
28 Days Later
Starring Peaky Blinders' lead star Cillian Murphy, 28 Days Later is now 20 years on from its release – and still proving as popular as ever. Thanks to its enigmatic cast and clever script, it remains a horror movie masterpiece, and one of our favourite, original takes on the (arguably overdone) zombie genre.
Main character Jim is one of four survivors battling to stay alive in the face of impossible odds. Trying desperately to evade those infected with a highly contagious pathogen known as the “rage virus”, they’re forced into an existence that none of them are remotely prepared for.
One of the best things about the film is the zombies, which are faster, meaner, and more intelligent than those in most movies of this type. It makes them pose a real and terrifying threat to the desperate group of survivors, keeping audiences on the edge of their seats from start to finish.
Children of Men
Most of us prep for disaster in logical ways. These days, there's advice galore on how to be best equipped should a natural or man-made disaster arrive on our doorsteps. For example, it's common for many citizens to keep a tech survival kit to hand, like this one from ExpressVPN, so that in the event of fire or flood, we have digital backups of our most important files and access to the internet. If we’re savvy, this might include a pocketknife and torch for surviving until help arrives.
One scenario we’re not prepared for, however, is the one explored in Children of Men. Children of Men is clever because it focuses on real issues. It asks what would happen if declining fertility and economic depression combined – and it’s a scary reality.
Set in 2027, the premise is this: for 18 years, no child has been born. However, Kee has bucked that trend by becoming the first woman in almost two decades to fall pregnant. Naturally, she finds herself of interest to a group known as the Human Project, which is working on curing infertility.
The premise sounds concerning but not exactly scary, which is why you need to watch it. Tinged with horror throughout, Children of Men has several genuinely frightening moments and asks some difficult questions of its audience.
A Quiet Place
Now for a more recent addition to this list: 2018’s A Quiet Place. This film is terrifying throughout, with the slightest noise setting your nerves on edge. Set in a post-apocalyptic world, its monsters have hyper-sensitive hearing and have already wiped out most of the population.
Headed by husband-and-wife duo John Krasinski and Emily Blunt, the film’s protagonists try to survive by staying as quiet as possible – no easy feat given they’re traveling with children in tow. The stakes are high and the tension constant, meaning the audience can’t relax for an instant.
Here’s Insider’s take on what makes A Quiet Place’s opening sequence one of the scariest of all time.
When it comes to scaring yourself silly, these three doomsday horror films are sure to do it, but if none of these options tick your boxes, here are 10 others that What Culture recommends. Which of them will you settle down in front of the next time you need your scary movie fix?
