In recent years, Netflix has produced some much-loved horror movies. Bird Box arrived in 2018 and starred Sandra Bullock, for example. The movie became a cultural phenomenon and is Netflix’s biggest hit to date. The Platform followed in 2019, and was praised for its premise and social commentary.
But since then, things have gotten a little less scary. Luckily, it looks like Netflix are getting their hunger for horror back. Here are some of the movies upcoming on the streaming platform to watch if you’re looking to find more thrills.
The Deliverance
The Deliverance is a supernatural horror movie directed by Lee Daniels. The story is based on an alleged haunting in Indiana in 2011, and is written by David Coggeshall and Elijah Bynum.
The movie will feature a stellar cast including Grammy and Golden Globe winner Andra Dray and multiple Emmy, Tony and Golden Globe winner Glenn Close. It’s set to be Daniels’ fifth directing credit, with his most recent film being the 2021 biopic The United States vs Billie Holiday.
The Deliverance will not be the first film on the Indiana haunting, after Demon House, a documentary by paranormal investigator Zak Bagans, was released in 2018.
Having first heard about the movie back in early 2022, Netflix subscribers will finally enjoy it this summer, with The Deliverance set for a 16 August release date.
BioShock
Although it doesn’t yet have a confirmed release date, Netflix’s adaptation of the much beloved games franchise, BioShock, is eagerly anticipated.
The games were set in Rapture, an underwater city constructed in the 1940s. They were lauded by critics for their immersive atmospheres and occasionally haunting visuals. 2K Cloud Chamber, the games’ developers, prioritised the visual aspects. Their senior cinematic designer Jeff Spoonhower recently advertised available positions online.
Francis Lawrence is in the director’s chair and will presumably be hoping to replicate the games’ atmospheres. Lawrence is known for I Am Legend and much of the The Hunger Games series.
The script will be written by Michael Green, who is also working on an upcoming Blade film, having worked on 2017’s Blade Runner 2049. Green’s most recent film was A Haunting in Venice.
Frankenstein
Guillermo del Toro is taking the reins on Frankenstein, an adaptation of Mary Shelley’s classic novel. Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus is widely considered an all-time classic in literature.
The director has long been fascinated with monsters and fantasy, and previously worked on movies like Blade II and Hellboy. The last film del Toro directed was also based on a novel – 2022’s Pinocchio (also a Netflix production), which he co-wrote.
The Frankenstein novel will give del Toro, who started his career in film with horror movies like 2001’s The Devil’s Backbone, plenty to work with. The story gave birth to one of the most famous monsters, commonly referred to as Frankenstein (although Frankenstein was his creator, and the unnamed monster is referred to as “the Creature” in the novel).
The monster will be played by Jacob Elordi, of Saltburn fame, who replaced Andrew Garfield when the latter pulled out due to scheduling conflicts.
Guillermo del Toro had been interested in making an adaption of Frankenstein since 2007, but the project was delayed. Now the movie is hopefully not too far away, with principal photography expected to wrap this month.
Pedro Páramo
Another upcoming film based on a novel, Pedro Páramo will tell the story of a Mexican man who promises his dying mother that he’ll meet his father for the first time. The film will be directed by Rodrigo Prieto, noted for his cinematography work, and will mark Prieto’s debut as a director.
Netflix have called the novel “one of the most representative works in Mexican literature” and praised the film script, written by Mateo Gil, as “excellent”. The cast is headlined by Manuel García-Rulfo, who starred in Netflix’s own The Lincoln Lawyer series.
