So get your popcorn ready as we take a trip down memory lane with horror movies that will have you hiding under your blankets.
Paranormal Activity
Paranormal Activity completely changed the horror genre when it came out. Although the movie's “found footage” style isn’t new, as you can see in films like The Blair Witch Project, it’s still considered one of the most realistic horror films of all time.
The story is centered around a young couple, Katie and Micah, who move into their new home in California. Since childhood, there was a demon that terrorized Katie. They decide to set up cameras around their home to see if they can record any paranormal activity in the house.
While they sleep, blankets get pulled off the couple, and doors and drawers are opened by an unseen force, turning their home into a horror house. The movie is exceptionally chilling and will probably give you insomnia for a few weeks. We don’t recommend watching it if you live alone.
28 Days Later
28 Days Later is a 2002 film directed by Danny Boyle. It’s not one of your conventional horror movies with jump scares, but the plot is terrifying because it could happen in reality. In the film, a group of animal rights activists free a chimp that’s been infected with the “Rage” virus.
One of the main characters of the story, Jim, wakes up from a coma only to find his city completely desolate. The virus turns humans into creatures that cannot think or feel emotion. Their only desire is to beat others to death or spread the virus.
World War Z
World War Z is similar to the movie 28 Days Later. It’s a film featuring Brad Pitt as the main character, who plays an ex-United Nations employee named Gerry. In the opening scene, Gerry is stuck in traffic with his wife and two daughters.
Suddenly, strange activities start happening around them. Bombs start going off in the distance, people start crashing into each other, and there seem to be zombie-like humans biting unsuspecting citizens.
World War Z is about a zombie pandemic that breaks out. But what makes this movie so terrifying is that the zombies aren’t slow like they are in shows such as The Walking Dead. These creatures can run, climb, and jump, and they’re extremely fast and strong.
The Exorcism of Emily Rose
The Exorcism of Emily Rose is said to be the scariest possession movie since The Exorcist. The film is based on a true story about a German girl named Anneliese Michel who went through 67 exorcism rites in the year that led up to her death in the 70s.
In the film, the girl’s name is changed to Emily Rose, and the plot is also altered slightly to make the movie more interesting. Emily is a college student who believes she is possessed.
Doctors in the film believed that her episodes were caused by epilepsy, while her parents and bishop were convinced it was demon possession and did all they could to save her. The priest who treated Emily is put on trial for negligence that resulted in Emily’s death.
There are some creepy scenes in this movie, and Jennifer Carpenter’s performance is out of this world. It’s a film worth watching, especially if you want to learn more about Anneliese.
Evil Dead Rise
Evil Dead Rise was recently released in April 2023 and is also another movie about demon possession, but it wasn’t based on true events. The film follows the story of two estranged sisters named Ellie and Beth, who reunite and come across The Book of The Dead.
Ellie gets possessed by demons from the book and then proceeds to terrorize her daughter and her sister. There are plenty of jump scares in this movie and lots of twists that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
