Dracula and vampires have long been points of fascination in fiction. Creepy beings that need to feed on human blood and lurk the night, but can often put on the façade of an upstanding citizen during the day remain embedded in pop culture. On 1 April, vampires hit the big screen again, this time via Sony’s take on the conflicted Marvel character, Morbius.
A fan-favourite in the comics, Dr Michael Morbius has to battle between his need to quell the side effects of a cure to his blood disorder and attempt to do good as a doctor. He’s an enigmatic anti-hero, but on the big screen, Morbius was panned by critics and audiences alike. That said, it still reeled in $39 million at the box office on its opening weekend, topping the chart for the weekend.
Naturally, there have been a fair few hits and misses in the history of vampires in entertainment, but it hasn’t appeared to wane the theme’s popularity.
Vampires roam beyond the big screen
It can take a year to make a TV series and several years to make a new video game, so both can be a bit slow to catch a trend. In the world of real money casinos, however, developers can quickly react to trends, which is why many have created vampire slots in recent years. Blood Suckers 2 and Universal Monsters: Dracula headline the selection in terms of popularity, with them both leaning into the theme and starring the most famous of all denizens of the night.
In video gaming, vampires have taken many forms and are included in different ways. Despite not being the core game, the Dawnguard DLC to Skyrim that introduced enhanced vampirism was very well-received and remains a big reason the 2011 release was so long-lived. It changed vampirism from being somewhat of a hindering condition to a mighty power that allowed you to transform into a truly terrifying beast capable of taking on a whole city's guard if necessary.
More recently, Vampire: The Masquerade – Swansong continued the long-running series with the new graphic novel-inspired RPG. It hasn't received the best reviews out of the gate, with some pointing to a false perception that it was along the lines of the highly anticipated Bloodlines 2, or at least an apéritif to the upcoming release.
Of course, the biggest dose of vampirism in gaming comes from the Castlevania franchise. Gothic horror gaming franchise launched in 1986 with Castlevania and has since become a major media franchise, with Dracula as the core character. Now, there are comic books and anime to accompany the games - the last of which, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2, was released in 2014. It has been reported that its parent company, Konami, has added another title to the franchise that already spans over 40 varied game releases.
Cinema remains the main host for vampires
Sucking the cash from the wallets of movie lovers looks to be the main way that the dreaded vampire is deployed in entertainment. While it will make purists shudder, the four later Twilight Saga movies remain the highest-grossing vampire movies of all time. Just behind, and at a bit of a stretch, is I Am Legend. The novel that it’s based on does deal with vampires, but the movie version from 2007 pivoted to infected humans, but they carried similar traits to vampires – bar the intellect.
None of these stand as the outright best movies with vampires ever made, however, proving that vampires have an inherent draw at the box office regardless of quality or tenuous links. Instead, this convincing ranking lists Bram Stoker’s Dracula, by Francis Ford Coppola, as the second-best vampire movie, which was a faithful adaptation of the novel. Atop the list is From Dusk Till Dawn, made just four years after Coppola’s Dracula, which many may not have known was a vampire movie going in or even until later into the film.
Vampires have always been able to capture the imaginations of entertainment seekers, and while Morbius will go down as a critical flop, it still made a decent sum on its opening weekend.
