Everything We Know About the Heat Sequel So Far

Heat was a 1995 film by Michael Mann. It brought together two of Hollywood’s greatest actors, Al Pacino and Robert De Niro, in a thrilling crime epic. In this article, we discuss what is known so far about the follow-up.

Pacino and De Niro are two of Hollywood’s greatest. Yet until Heat, they had only shared a movie poster from the Godfather franchise together and had never actually met on screen. Heat gave them a platform, albeit a short coffee shop scene, to show why they were the best. Thirty years later, a sequel is in the works. We discuss everything known about Heat 2 so far in the article below.

The background to the original Heat
Heat was released in 1995 and was a production by Michael Mann. It was a classic American true crime movie in the vein of Scorsese. It had a stellar cast with roles by Val Kilmer, Jon Voight, and Tom Sizemore.

However, its real pull was the two leading actors: Al Pacino and Robert De Niro finally went head to head in a role worthy of the pair. De Niro played the role of a detective in the LAPD who was out to catch a career criminal played by Pacino. The tension was amped up by a terrific plot that actually had them meet very seldomly throughout the movie. The one scene in which they had a conversation was a career highlight for both actors, as the characters discussed how similar they were yet how far apart.

The year was a golden one for Robert De Niro, who also had the classic Casino released in the same year. It follows the story of a gambling expert who is asked to oversee the operations of a casino, charting his troubles and the breakdown of his relationships. Since the movie was made, the industry has changed greatly. New online casinos allow people to play from their devices, and welcome bonuses have attracted fresh players from different demographics. Even in locations like Canada, there are top casino games for real money in Ontario and other provinces. This movie and others in the same period, such as Rounders, are said to have sparked off the later poker boom, which led to the popularity of online casinos.

The original script for Heat was actually written back in 1979. This makes the 30-year wait for a sequel seem less of an issue. It was based on the real-life story of police officer Chuck Adamson, who spent his life trying to apprehend a criminal named Neil McCauley. It was used as a pilot for a series that became a television movie named L.A. Takedown. When it was not used, the script was revisited with a look at turning it into a feature film.

Rumours about Heat 2
The plot for Heat 2 will follow the book released by Michael Mann and Meg Gardner in 2022. It was Mann’s debut novel and was both a prequel and sequel to the movie. The tale begins almost directly after the original film's ending, then jumps through a number of times and locations across the globe. This sees it visit the early years of the main characters, their career starting around 1988, then jumps forward to the main character Vincent rounding up the remaining members of the gang.

The Film Stage publication even reported that it has moved forward at Warner Brothers and has been allocated a substantial budget, needed to hire actors the best actors and film in multiple world locations. There have been rumors of those who may be stepping into the roles, including Channing Tatum and Jeremy Allen White. IMDB currently has Austin Butler confirmed, though not in any specific role.

In the De Niro role, Adam Driver is taking the reigns. Heat 2 was always known to be Mann's next film after Ferrari; however, no one realized how soon it would be and that Adam Driver would be coming with him. Mann has also praised how well he and Driver work together, sharing similar views and work ethics.

After this, the cast rumors are speculative at least. Ana De Armas is supposedly the female lead. There is also talk that Val Kilmer will return, though he has had a huge gap since the last movie, so he must be in an older character part. He also rarely does many movies these days, so he may not be inclined to rear his head.

Suggestions have been that Pacino himself could be returning to one of his biggest roles ever. However, he was shot at the end of the last movie. This would make his role fleeting at best, perhaps in flashbacks as the chronologically fluctuating movie would lend itself to his.

With such top-class talent and outstanding writing on board, it is hard to imagine the movie being anything less than a hit. A passion project of Mann’s, he is currently on a roll. Heat 2 is shaping up to be a fantastic conclusion.
