Danish media and, more broadly, Scandinavian media has been rising in prominence significantly over the last few years. Helped by the hit 2010 movie Trollhunter and a whole host of Nordic noir, such as The Killing, Bordertown, and The Bridge, the region continues to go from strength to strength.
Now, we look to be in a trend of very strong Danish horror movies. Several have come out in recent years to deliver tension and frights, and one was so well-received that, even though it was mostly in English for its 2022 release, it’s already being remade by Hollywood.
Venturing into Danish horrors
Beyond Denmark, perhaps the best-known fictions to come from the nation are the ancient myths held dear by the Vikings. This makes a lot of sense because the world of Norse myth is so rich with larger-than-life characters, gruesome clashes between hard-headed deities, and tremendous monsters.
They continue to be drawn upon to this day, from Thor in the biggest series of movies of all time to the God of Thunder headlining one of the premier jackpot slots of Mega Moolah. It’s in the suite with the likes of Goddess and Immortal Romance, yet is regularly the most played among those spinning for the multi-million progressive prizes.
However, Danish horror movies don’t necessarily play into famed myths or draw on its many great beasts. We’ve seen a lot of this approach in the past, from Leprechaun to The Babadook and even the modern myth of Slenderman. The best Danish horrors sidestep these elements to deliver unique and truly horrifying stories.
You can find a whole bunch of them on Shudder, but the headline acts would likely be Breeder, Attachment, Nightwatch, and Speak No Evil. If you’re squeamish, it’d be best to avoid Breeder, while Attachment infuses romance into the horror genre quite masterfully, and Speak No Evil ranks as one of the best modern horrors.
Nightwatch, now deemed a classic, will be getting a sequel later this year. Just 30 years on from the cult classic’s release, Nightwacth: Demons Are Forever has unveiled its cast, which features Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, and that it will get a streaming release on 17 May 2024 – padding Shudder’s Danish horror collection.
Danish great getting the Hollywood treatment
Remakes and reboots are the trend in Hollywood right now. Be it due to creative bankruptcy or studios fearing that audiences don’t like new ideas and stories, this is the way right now. So, it’s perfectly fitting that a well-received Danish film that was mostly in English would get a remake two years after its 2022 release.
This movie is Speak No Evil. It’s superbly well-made for a $3.1 million budget horror and cuts deep with its social satire. As such, it seems unlikely that Universal Studios will be able to match its quality in this hasty remake. After all, we’ve already seen the remakes of foreign horrors like Martyrs, The Grudge, Oldboy, and Rec completely miss the point or fail to capture the same charm.
Regardless, Speak No Evil is swiftly on the way, and even has a rather good trailer. Starring James McAvoy and due for release on 13 September 2024, at the very least, the trailer makes it seem like the tension builds up well, and it plays into the tongue-less plot point in what looks to be the same way. We’ll just have to see if any punches get pulled towards the end.
There are loads of great Danish horror movies readily available if you want to mix up your movie night, but if you’d rather stick to Hollywood’s outings, a remake of a recent great will be here soon.
