Best to Worst: 7 Horror Movies Based on Games

There are quite a few horror movies based on games out there. Some of them actually have a story and some action, while others are nothing but pure horror, without an actual goal. It's like any other genre in the cinema industry.

With this thought in mind, let’s take a look at some of the most popular horror movies and whether or not they met gamers’ expectations.

Silent Hill

Silent Hill has perfectly captured the essence of the game, taking viewers through a thrilling experience that won’t disappoint. If you’ve played the game, you’ll recognize the action straight away. Even if you didn’t, get ready to explore one of the scariest horror movies ever made.

Sure, it’s not the best horror movie ever made, but when it comes to movies based on games, it certainly stands out in the crowd. The film’s haunting set design and unsettling monsters, like the infamous Pyramid Head, create a sense of dread that few adaptations can match.

When it first came out, Silent Hill was considered a failure. The reviews weren’t great either. With time, critics understood that the movie managed to bring to life what fans truly enjoyed about the game, so it’s now considered one of the most cinematic representations of a game.

Resident Evil: Apocalypse

While there are a few movies out there, as well as some solid animated releases, Resident Evil: Apocalypse is the perfect balance between cinema and the gaming industry. It brings to life some of the definitive elements of the game, despite some unusual associations as well.

For example, it was nice to see Nemesis brought to life, but fans of the game will claim it doesn’t make too much sense. Now, what most people don’t understand is that a movie is for everyone and not just for gamers, so this release was perfect for both worlds.

Five Nights At Freddy's

Five Nights at Freedy’s is somewhere in the middle. Some say it was a great movie. Fans weren’t so happy about it, despite many references to the actual game. One thing is for sure though, it came out as a nice release in the jump-scare category.

For fans, there are quite a few conflicting ideas that may seem off. For the average moviegoer, it’s a great show. The action goes in a few different directions, only to appease as many people as possible.

All in all, the movie became a hit once it came out and turned out to be the perfect Halloween release. In fact, Five Nights at Freddy’s quickly shattered box office records as it earned over $80 million in its opening weekend and became the biggest Halloween weekend release ever. You don’t have to wait until the next Halloween to watch it though.

BloodRayne

Some would say BloodRayne is a classic action flick, but for gaming enthusiasts. It's the average movie where you can pretty much guess what will happen, but somehow, it still became a cult movie. Most of its popularity was driven by the gaming industry, rather than the average cinema aspect.

According to some critics, BloodRayne tried to implement more successful ideas associated with Underworld or Blade, but it actually created a big salad. It wasn’t the best adaptation of a game, but it’s still a watchable release for fans.

All in all, if you like to watch beautiful women slaying vampires, you can’t go wrong with it. BloodRayne doesn’t take itself too seriously and for those in the mood for fun, it delivers exactly what it promises.

Doom

Back in the day, Doom was all about killing anything that moved. Sadly, the movie tried the same thing; the concept is a bit outdated for cinema. With Dwayne Johnson starring in the production, you can see that each character tries their best, yet the scenario simply doesn’t work.

Even Dwayne Johnson agreed that Doom is an example of what not to do in cinema. In interviews, he openly talked about the film's failure and he even admitted that it was an incredibly unsuccessful project.

Dead Rising: Watchtower

Dead Rising: Watchtower isn’t the worst possible release out there, but it’s quite far from the concept of the game. The video game franchise is clearly a hit. It’s intense and active, but it also hooks you in straight away.

Well, everything changes with the movie because what works for games won’t always work for a cinematic release. What came out is an average zombie movie with a predictable outcome. You can probably guess it after 15 minutes into it.

House of the Dead

House of the Dead is one of those movies you need to see. Not because it’s good, but because it’s so bad that you wouldn’t believe someone made such a movie. You’d have to see it to believe it. There’s so much going on that it’s nearly impossible to keep up. This movie is infamous for randomly inserting actual video game footage into action scenes.

You’ll see effects from other movies, random scenes that depict the game, unbelievable decisions made by the characters and so on. No matter how much you loved the game, this movie is a sad comedy that makes you cry and laugh at the same time.
